Some pretty interesting local history that I only just discovered yesterday
So, very close to where I live is this group of islands called the Isles of Scilly which I have visited a couple of times. Anyway as it turns out these islands were actually at war with the Netherlands for 335 years. It was actually caused during the English Civil war when the Royalist’s were forced to retreat out to the islands, the Netherlands being allied with the Parliamentarians declared war. Anyway the whole thing got pretty much forgotten and was only re-discovered when a myth was stirring about it during the 1980’s which lead to some research on it, and ultimately to the truth being discovered. The Dutch embassador Rein Huydecoper visited the islands on the 17th of April 1986 to sign a peace treaty which officially ended the war. The war was officially one of the longest in history and resulted in 0 deaths by either side making it the least bloodiest.
